What you should Know as a Pregnant Mom-to-be

Mama said I’m inexperienced and don’t know a thing about pregnancy. Could she be right?

Here is what transpired between my mum and me.

(you may read story in previous article)

I was in the kitchen when I heard a knock on the door. Mama arrived safely from the village. She entered with a fuzzy look. The light on her face was bright enough to set the room ablaze but I didn’t care.

The good news was about to spill but I withheld it.

“Is your husband around?” She said,

“No, he went on a business trip and will be back in a few days”.

“How will you have children when he isn’t always available?” “Is everything about making money? Now I have your time and will ensure it happens before I leave…”

I swiftly interrupted. “Mama, it has happened! I am pregnant”

“Don’t joke with me… ” she swung her luggage on the floor.

“Mama, I said It has happened and I mean it!”

Mama loosened up her wrapper and sang in a local dialect with tears of joy. She danced till her heart could contain.

Now that the game has changed. I thought I would finally be at rest alas I was wrong.

Mama had backup plans. She became a “doctor” within seconds. “You are not going to tell anyone about your pregnancy yet. I don’t want to lose my grandchild…”

I interrupted her. ” The dinner is ready. Come and have a tasty meal, Mama… ” I have prepared your favourite meal; pounded yam with mouth-watering okro soup garnished with snails…”

“Ah! I hope you didn’t taste it. You can’t eat nor taste okro, nor snails. Oh Lord! Please, I don’t want to have a grandchild with a disability”. She seemed dramatic to me.

I became worried about the new journey. I tried to manoeuvre the situation and promised to see the doctor.

“Mama I will see the doctor tomorrow afternoon just settle and have your dinner… “

“Never will I allow you to go out at noon. Evils parade at that time”…

“You can’t also eat Okro with snails, just enter your kitchen and make banana smoothies and add these powdery herbs. The baby will be healthy and strong”. She handed a wrapped white paper to me, mumbled “inexperience fellow” and walked away.
